Closed Primary System – Why Your Voter Registration Matters in Washington County

At the Washington County Republican Party, we believe every conservative voice should count — especially when it comes to choosing the candidates who will represent our values in November.

Kentucky operates a closed primary system. This means you can only vote in the primary election of the political party with which you are registered. If you are registered as a Republican, you can vote in the Republican primary. If you are registered as an Independent or with another party, you cannot participate in either the Republican or Democratic primary.

This system ensures that the voters who select our party’s nominees are those who share our Republican principles. It protects the integrity of the nominating process so that the candidates who advance to the general election truly reflect the will of Republican voters.

Important Deadlines for the 2026 Primary

• Primary Election Day: Tuesday, May 19, 2026 (polls open 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.)

• Voter Registration Deadline (to register as a new voter or update your address/name): Monday, April 20, 2026 by 4:00 p.m. local time.

• Party Affiliation Change Deadline: If you are already registered and want to switch your party to Republican (or any other party) for the 2026 primary, that change needed to be completed by December 31, 2025.

New voters can still choose their party affiliation when registering up until the April 20 deadline.

Why the Primary Matters — Especially in Washington County

In many parts of Kentucky — including Washington County — the primary is often the most important election. Our county is strongly conservative, and in most local races (county judge executive, sheriff, magistrates, school board, and state legislative seats), the Republican nominee is heavily favored to win in November.

That means the real decision about who will hold these offices is frequently made in the May primary. Low turnout in the primary gives a small group of voters outsized influence. By showing up and voting in the Republican primary, you help ensure strong, principled candidates advance.

1. Check your registration right now at the official Kentucky Voter Information Portal: https://govote.ky.gov Make sure you are listed as a Republican if that’s your party.

2. If you are not yet registered or need to update your information, do so before April 20, 2026.

3. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and plan to vote. Your polling location will be listed when you check your registration online.
